Cam Ranh

Cam Ranh is a resort market worked off a military field, and the two halves have never quite been introduced. The runway was built for aircraft that were not carrying holidaymakers, which is why it is the least performance-limited departure a junior pilot will see.

The city the passengers actually want is Nha Trang, half an hour up the coast. Nobody on board is in a hurry except you.

A flat coastal peninsula with high ground inland and water on three sides. Approaches are open and uncomplicated, and the field is dry by Vietnamese standards — this stretch of coast sits in a rain shadow that keeps it clear while the rest of the country is under water.

What it does have is wind. Long unobstructed fetch off the sea means a steady, honest crosswind for much of the year, which is a good thing to learn on: it is consistent enough to plan for, unlike the gusty terrain-driven variety further north.

Leisure flying, and the schedule shape that comes with it — heavy weekends, thin midweek, and a charter pattern that fills the board at odd hours.

Sectors run longer here than at the northern bases because the useful markets are further away, so the hours accumulate faster per duty even though the board is quieter.

A full holiday cabin is a different animal to a full business cabin. Compliance is the recurring problem rather than comfort: seatbelt signs ignored, cabin baggage in the aisle at the wrong moment, and the occasional passenger who has started the holiday early.

That mix skews the events toward conflict and non-compliance rather than weather. Most of it resolves without a diversion, and the ones that do not are the ones you will remember.
