Da Nang

the crosswind coast

Mountains on one side, the sea on the other, and a crosswind down the middle. The prettiest approach on the network, and the one that bites.

THE POSTING

Da Nang is the middle of the country and the middle of the network. Almost everything that runs north or south passes through it, so a base here reaches more of the board than anywhere else open to a new cadet — and reaches most of it in under two hours.

It is also the base people stay at. The field is ten minutes from the beach, the flying is varied enough that you never quite settle into a routine, and the weather makes sure of the rest.

THE FIELD

The runways sit inside the city, with the sea a few miles east and the Truong Son range close in to the west. That geometry is the whole story: the terrain funnels the wind and it rarely lines up with the pavement. Crosswind approaches here are ordinary rather than notable, and the sea breeze can swing thirty degrees between top of descent and the flare.

The season that matters is September to November, when the storms come in off the South China Sea, the field spends days below minima, and every alternate on the coast fills up at the same time. The rest of the year is hot, humid and mostly benign.

THE FLYING

Short sectors and high turn frequency. A domestic trunk that runs full at both ends of the day, business traffic up to the capital, and leisure inbound from the regional markets.

The duties are shorter than anything either hub will hand you, and that cuts both ways: you fly more of them for the same hours, and every one ends in a landing that gets graded.

IN THE CABIN

Short sectors mean the cabin never really settles. Service is compressed, the descent starts before the last cart is stowed, and the crew-tasking windows are tight enough that a slow taxi shows up in your compliance.

The weather is what generates the events. Ride quality on the approach is the number that moves here, and the go-around discipline that comes with it — a coastal field with a shifting wind produces more unstable approaches than anywhere else on the network, and pressing one of them is the quickest way to lose Airmanship you had.

FLYING IT FOR REAL

The default field is serviceable, and the terrain around it is the real attraction. Handmade scenery for this one tends to add the city and the peninsula rather than the airport itself.

Nothing here is required. Every sector out of this base flies on default scenery, on any simulator the Companion App supports.
