THE POSTING

Tan Son Nhat is the busiest airport in the country and it is wedged into the middle of the city with no room to grow. Everything here is tight — the slots, the taxiways, the turnarounds, and the tempers.

It is the other hub, the other widebody base, and the posting most pilots are working toward without quite admitting it.

THE FIELD

Two parallel runways on flat ground with the city built right up to the fence. There is no terrain and no weather problem worth the name; the constraint is entirely congestion.

The southern climate is simpler than the north — a wet season from May to November that delivers heavy afternoon convection and clears, rather than the grey persistence of the delta. What it does is stack the arrivals: a single storm cell over the field turns into a hold, and a hold at this airport turns into a queue.

THE FLYING

The deepest board on the network, domestic through long-haul, with the widest spread of sector lengths and the least forgiving schedule.

Ground time is the scarce resource. A base here is less about the flying and more about whether you can protect a turnaround.

IN THE CABIN

Volume changes the character of everything. Full aircraft, tight connections and a ground operation with no slack means the disruption events here start before the doors close and follow you down the route.

The compensation is that handling it well is worth more. The same event on a full widebody moves the record further than it does on a half-empty regional sector.

FLYING IT FOR REAL

Well served by default on most platforms, and the city around it does more for the approach than the terminal detail does. This is not a field that needs anything bought for it.

Nothing here is required. Every sector out of this base flies on default scenery, on any simulator the Companion App supports.
