Almaty
mountains at the end of the runway
Mountains at the end of the runway and winters that mean it. A long way from the delta, and the posting that changes what you think flying is.
THE POSTING
Almaty is an outstation, and the most expensive posting on the board. It exists because the Central Asian routes out of Vietnam are real, and because a career that finishes at "you may live in Ho Chi Minh City" has nothing left to spend money on.
It is also a genuine change of discipline. Everything a pilot learns on a hot, wet, sea-level coast has to be relearned here.
TRANSFER ONLY · MAJOR HUB
THE FIELD
A field on high ground with the Zailiysky Alatau wall rising immediately to the south. Terrain is the defining feature of every departure and every approach, and the elevation costs you performance before the temperature has been considered.
Winters mean it. Snow, ice, contaminated runways, and de-icing with a holdover clock running are routine from late autumn, and the valley traps an inversion that can put the whole city under haze for days. This is the first base on the ladder where the ground operation can end your day before you fly.
THE FLYING
Long sectors, thin frequency, and a widebody board. Duties are fewer and larger — you will fly less often and log more when you do.
The network from here reaches west and north into markets that have nothing in common with the Vietnamese trunk.
WHERE IT TAKES YOU — 23 DESTINATIONS
IN THE CABIN
Long sectors change the event mix completely. There is time for things to develop, time for a medical to become serious, and enough distance that the diversion options are genuinely limited.
Winter ground events — de-icing windows, contaminated runways, cancellations that are the correct call — carry more weight here than anywhere else on the network.
FLYING IT FOR REAL
Coverage varies a lot by platform, and the mountains matter more than the field does. Mesh and photoreal for the range south of the city change this base more than any terminal add-on.
Nothing here is required. Every sector out of this base flies on default scenery, on any simulator the Companion App supports.
